CMA AAMA: Medical Assistant Program Overview at MCC
The Medical Assistant Certificate Program at Muskegon Community College (MCC), located at 221 South Quarterline Road in Muskegon, Michigan, offers an excellent start to a career in the local healthcare field. This CAAHEP-accredited program was initially accredited in 2017 and is designed to prepare graduates for essential roles encompassing both administrative and clinical responsibilities.
Program Overview and Training
Students are trained in both administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician. The curriculum includes:
- Administrative tasks like scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and insurance coding.
- Clinical skills such as taking vital signs, performing medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications.
Academic Standards and Practicum
A crucial component of the program is the 160-hour unpaid, supervised practicum (MA110). MCC maintains high academic standards; all Medical Assistant courses require a minimum grade of C+ (77%) for progression. Please note that non-MA transfer courses, such as Computer Science, have strict time limits for credit validation.
Certification and Career Path
Graduates are eligible to sit for both the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) national examination and the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) examination. The program achieves an outstanding 99% pass rate among its graduates for the national certification exam. The certificate also flows directly into an Associate in Science and Arts degree for further career advancement. Students should also explore Michigan-based financial aid programs like MI Guarantee or MI Reconnect.
