CMA AAMA: Medical Assistant Program Overview at COCC
The Medical Assistant (MA) Career Pathway Certificate of Completion Program at Central Oregon Community College (COCC) offers a highly rewarding and versatile entrance into the world of healthcare, right here in Bend. This cohort-modeled program is set in a supportive, simulated clinical environment within COCC’s state-of-the-art Health Careers Center and requires just four terms of training (including prerequisites) to prepare students for high-demand, entry-level careers.
Clinical and Administrative Training
Medical Assistants perform a crucial blend of tasks. The comprehensive curriculum covers essential skills across both clinical and administrative domains, including:
- Recording medical histories and taking vital signs.
- Administering vaccines and assisting physicians.
- Managing electronic medical records and patient scheduling.
The accredited training culminates in a required 160-hour practicum, which provides essential hands-on experience with local medical offices and is crucial for entering the Central Oregon job market.
Job Pipeline and Regional Expansion
COCC’s program features a strong regional connection, highlighted by a significant training partnership with St. Charles Health System. Through this collaboration, St. Charles covers tuition for trainees who commit to two years of employment, providing a direct job pipeline.
